Reservoir Commissioner Liou expressed his excitement at the central government actively promoting the protection area as well as Feitsui reservoir setting up the “Yellow-margined Box Turtle Halfway Home” to strengthen the restoration process.
Commissioner Liou stated that the Forestry Bureau assigned Feitsui Reservoir to co-manage the protection area with 6 key conservation measures: “Strengthen Protection Zone Inspection, Investigating Illegal Poaching”, “Preventing Water Quality Deterioration, Strengthening Reservoir Bank Protection”, “Improving Habitat Maintenance and Living Environment of Yellow-margined Box Turtle”, “Conducting Assessment of Yellow-margined Box Turtle Halfway Home”, “Strengthening Ecological Surveys, Monitoring Biological Research”, and “Promoting Yellow-margined Box Turtle Conservation Education.”
Meanwhile, to facilitate the conservation and restoration process of Yellow-margined Box Turtles, Feitsui authority has setup the “Yellow-margined Box Turtle Halfway Home” near the reservoir’s Water Resources Eco-education Center. The facility will be used to provide treatments to injured turtles and will serve as a temporary rehabilitation home before the turtles are released to the wild.
In light of the increase in turtle smuggling cases in 2013, Feitsui authority has sought help from Professor Chen of National Pingtung University of Science and Technology and Professor Wu of National Chung Hsing University to assess the turtle release research program as well as the chances of the successful restoration of assessment of Yellow-margined Box Turtles.
